Gibraltar is a British overseas territory and one of those little surprise drive-by visits that life serendipitously brought my way.
While still in the Army and working with Special Operations Command, we were scheduled to conduct training in an African country that happened to be in the process of a coup so the decision was made to conduct the training in Spain instead. No complaints from me. While in Spain, we had two very brief periods of free time so a buddy and I took the chance to visit Gibraltar and Morocco. More on Morocco on a different page.
Gibraltar is one of the most unique places I've ever visited. Located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is one of the smallest sovereign territories I've ever visited at only 2.6 square miles. It is bordered by Spain and holds a strategically important places at the northern part of the Strait of Gibraltar.
Interestingly, while in Gibraltar I was able to easily see three countries (Spain, Gibraltar/Great Britain, Morocco), two continents (Europe and Africa), and two major bodies of water (Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea).
